The Computer Revolution

It is the fruit of the arrival of computers in the field of synthesizers date from the early eighties. Can able to control instruments with cameras to record the notes played on their keyboards, sequencers. Previously, we used an analog system, the CV / Gate, based on the transmission of an electrical voltage. Require a cable to information, the CV / Gate quickly became inadequate for polyphonic synthesizers, and even more machines multitimbral. Should have been used many cables that voice polyphony and multitimbral channels!

In 1980, the manufacturer Roland has innovated by introducing a system on its machines to digital communication over a single cable to carry several separate information, the DSC. But in 1983, this method will disappear in favor of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), digital too, offering expansion options that are only now reaching their limits. Able to carry notes, controller values, sounds (as settings for synthesizers or as samples for samplers), codes or timing information for the automation of machines (sequencers, games lights), the MIDI standard will be adopted by all manufacturers and quickly becoming the standard for computer data transmission in the music field.
